GroupFour

Guidelines for teachers' responses weighted for self-evaluating purposes:
-Feedback should be given within a reasonable amount of time (7 days): 20%
-Maintain a respectful tone: 20%
-Write concisely so as to avoid overwhelming the student with excess comments: 20%
-Explain standardized rubric with students before due dates: 20%
-Recognize patterns of errors in students' writing and address recurring problems to the class as a whole: 20%

Restructuring classes to accommodate our goals:
-Build in one conference for each project (even if students come in pairs) to discuss "instructor draft"
-Invite student feedback (via flashlight surveys) on our goals' effectiveness and service to the students
-Require students to bring their top three (or more) questions about their draft to the conference
-Devote the class period after students receive their grades to the most common problems of projects (Q/A and lecture)

Suggestions for FYC Rubric:
-Circle numbers of problem items for individual students to refer to on assessment sheet.

J.D.,

I like the evidence I see here of the deep analysis you've done of the movie. Clearly you've engaged with the assignment and thought through alternative points of view by creatively rescripting the movie.

I also appreciate that you follow each example with analysis of that example. It's also clear that you've attempted supporting your thesis throughout the paper. However, I sometimes lose focus of your argument. One way to address this, I think, would be to clue us in more specifically to Tannen's argument, which you never make particularly clear.

Here's a few more things to consider:
-Organization: grouping similar ideas together would help me better follow your arguments and would eliminate the feeling of repetition.
-Focus: Is your paper more about the movie or about Tannen's argument? Less summary of the movie, more analysis of Tannen's argument
-There are several instances of awkward phrasing and misused commas. Have you tried reading your paper aloud? This might help you catch some of these.
